Since mid-2025, one of the biggest costs of menopause care in Ireland has quietly disappeared: under the State’s free HRT arrangement, the cost of the HRT medicine itself is now covered for women with a prescription, at participating pharmacies — including Laois Pharmacy.
What exactly is free?
- The HRT products themselves — patches, gels, sprays and tablets prescribed for menopausal symptoms are covered by the State.
- You still need a prescription from your GP (or a doctor treating your menopause) — the scheme covers the medicine, not the consultation.
- Bring your prescription to us as normal; ask our team and we’ll confirm what’s covered on your specific script before dispensing.
How to get free HRT — 3 steps
- Talk to your GP first. They’ll assess your symptoms and prescribe the HRT that suits you. (Not sure how to start that conversation? Our menopause support guide includes a symptom checklist you can bring with you.)
- Bring the prescription to Laois Pharmacy — in person or send a photo via WhatsApp on 085 840 7548 and collect when ready.
- Collect your HRT — with the product cost covered under the scheme.
What about other menopause supports?
HRT isn’t the only option, and it isn’t right for everyone. Our pharmacists can talk you through non-hormonal options for hot flushes and sleep, supplements with actual evidence behind them, and vaginal moisturisers and lubricants — and we’ll tell you honestly when something is better discussed with your GP.

The scheme is aimed at HRT products prescribed for menopausal symptoms. Coverage of a specific product depends on your prescription — bring it in and we’ll check it for you before anything is dispensed.
Can the pharmacist start me on HRT without a GP?
No — HRT is prescription-only, so your GP leads the decision. We’re the right people to ask about how to use it, side-effects, and everything over-the-counter alongside it.
