65 or over? This year you get the enhanced flu vaccine. The HSE recommends the adjuvanted flu vaccine for everyone aged 65 and over: it is designed to produce a stronger immune response in older adults, whose immune systems respond less to the standard vaccine. What happens at the pharmacy

Give your name at the counter and tell us your form is done. The pharmacist checks your answers with you, gives the vaccine in the upper arm (or the nasal spray for children), and asks you to stay for 15 minutes. If you have asked for the COVID-19 vaccine too, it is given at the same visit in the other arm. The whole thing takes about 20 minutes including the wait.

Do I need an appointment?

No — walk in any time we are open. Booking a time in the form just means no waiting. Either way, completing the form first means no paperwork on the day.

What is the enhanced vaccine for over-65s?

An adjuvanted flu vaccine: it contains an ingredient that boosts the immune response, which matters because immunity from the standard vaccine is weaker in older adults. It is the HSE’s recommended vaccine for everyone 65 and over this season and it is free. A sore arm for a day or two is a little more common than with the standard vaccine.

Can I get the COVID-19 vaccine at the same time?

Yes, if you are eligible for the autumn COVID-19 vaccine it can be given at the same visit, one in each arm. Tick “yes” in the form and we will have it ready.

Can my child get the flu vaccine at the pharmacy?

Yes — children aged 2 to 17 get the free nasal spray vaccine (no needle). A parent or guardian completes the form and comes with them.

I am pregnant — should I get it?

Yes. The flu vaccine is recommended and free at any stage of pregnancy and protects your baby for the first months of life.

Do I need my PPS number?

For a free HSE vaccine we record your PPS number. You can put it in the form or give it at the counter — either is fine.

Does the flu vaccine give you the flu?

No. It cannot cause flu. Some people get a sore arm, tiredness or mild aches for a day or two as the immune system responds.
