Book & complete the form

In Ireland the 2026/27 flu vaccine is free from the HSE for everyone aged 60 and over, children aged 2 to 17 (as a nasal spray), pregnant women, healthcare workers, carers and people with certain long-term conditions. It takes about 2 weeks to work, so get it as early as you can.

Every autumn the same questions arrive at our counter: Am I entitled to a free flu vaccine? When should I get it? Do I need an appointment? Here are the straight answers for the 2026/27 season in Ireland, plus a 10-second checker to see if yours is free.

Is the flu vaccine free for me?

Pick the first group that matches you.

Free. Everyone aged 60+ is covered, no medical card needed. Book online and we will text you a time.
Almost certainly free. Conditions like asthma, COPD, diabetes, heart disease, kidney disease and weakened immunity all qualify. Ask us, the list is long and most people on it don’t realise.
Free, and strongly recommended. Flu in pregnancy carries real risks, and the vaccine protects your baby for their first months too. You can get it at any stage of pregnancy.
Free, and it’s a nasal spray, not a needle. All children aged 2 to 17 qualify. One quick puff per nostril, done in a minute.
Free. Healthcare workers and carers of vulnerable people are covered.
Yours isn’t State-funded, but you can still get vaccinated at the pharmacy for a modest fee, many people see it as good-value sick-day insurance. Ask us for this season’s price.

When to get it

October is the sweet spot. The vaccine takes about two weeks to build protection, and flu in Ireland typically peaks from December to February. Getting vaccinated in October or November means you’re protected before the wave, and protection comfortably lasts the season. Late is still far better than never, we vaccinate right through the winter.

What to expect at the pharmacy

  • No GP visit needed, pharmacists have been vaccinating in Ireland for years.
  • A few quick screening questions, the jab (or nasal spray for children), and a short wait after. In and out in under 15 minutes.
  • Sore arm for a day or two is normal. You cannot catch flu from the vaccine, it contains no live flu virus (the children’s nasal spray uses a weakened form that cannot cause flu).
Worth pairing: if you’re eligible for the Covid booster or the shingles vaccine, ask us about doing them in the same visit, one trip, full protection.

Flu vaccine FAQs

Who gets the flu vaccine free in Ireland?

People aged 60+, anyone with a qualifying long-term condition, pregnant women, children aged 2 to 17, healthcare workers and carers. No medical card is required for these groups.

When should I get the flu vaccine?

October or November, protection takes about two weeks to build and flu peaks in Ireland from December to February. Vaccination later in winter is still worthwhile.

Can the flu vaccine give you the flu?

No. The injected vaccine contains no live virus. A sore arm or mild tiredness for a day or two is a normal immune response, not flu.
