Menopause in Ireland: What Actually Helps (and What to Ask Your Pharmacist)

Menopause has finally become something Irish women talk about openly — and about time. Around 600,000 women in Ireland are peri- or post-menopausal right now, and while every experience is different, nobody should be told to simply put up with symptoms that have real solutions.

The symptoms nobody warns you about

Beyond hot flushes and night sweats: broken sleep, brain fog, anxiety that arrives out of nowhere, joint aches, dry skin and hair changes. If this cluster sounds familiar and you’re over 40, perimenopause is worth considering — even if your periods haven’t stopped.

What the evidence supports

HRT — talk to your GP

For most healthy women with significant symptoms, HRT is the most effective treatment and modern evidence shows the benefits generally outweigh risks when started around menopause. That conversation belongs with your GP — and since 2025, HRT itself is free of charge in Ireland (dispensing fees may apply), so cost should never be the barrier. We dispense HRT prescriptions daily and can answer practical questions about patches, gels and timing.

Supplements that earn their place

  • Vitamin D — bone health becomes critical after oestrogen falls; most Irish adults are low anyway
  • Magnesium — reasonable evidence for sleep quality and restless legs
  • Calcium — if dairy intake is low, to protect bone density
  • Browse our vitamins & supplements range or ask us what suits your situation

The everyday changes that compound

Strength exercise twice a week protects bone and mood. Cutting alcohol reduces flushes. A cool bedroom, cotton layers and a bedside fan tame night sweats. None of it is glamorous; all of it helps.

A private word, any time

Our consultation room is there for exactly these conversations — symptoms, supplement interactions, or making sense of what your GP prescribed. No appointment needed, and nothing you could ask would surprise us.
