Common Conditions Service in Portlaoise — What Can a Pharmacist Treat?

Waiting weeks to see a GP for a minor ailment can be frustrating — and it puts unnecessary pressure on GP surgeries. The Common Conditions Service at Laois Pharmacy in Portlaoise means you can get expert assessment and treatment from a qualified pharmacist without needing a GP appointment at all.

What is the Common Conditions Service?

The Common Conditions Service is an HSE-funded service that allows pharmacists to assess, advise on, and in many cases supply treatment for a range of common minor ailments. It is available at Laois Pharmacy to patients with a medical card, free of charge.

What Conditions Can a Pharmacist Treat?

Under the Common Conditions Service, our pharmacists can help with:

  • Sore throat — assessment and appropriate treatment
  • Earache — including assessment for ear infections
  • Conjunctivitis (eye infections)
  • Cystitis (urinary tract infection) in uncomplicated cases in women
  • Cold sores
  • Nappy rash
  • Oral thrush
  • Headlice
  • Scabies
  • Mild eczema and dermatitis
  • Threadworms

How Does it Work?

Simply visit us at Laois Pharmacy, 1 Dunamaise House, Portlaoise. One of our pharmacists will conduct a short private consultation, assess your symptoms, and either provide treatment directly or refer you to a GP if needed.

For medical card holders, this service is completely free of charge. Private patients can also avail of the service — ask our team about pricing.

When Should I Go to a GP Instead?

Our pharmacists are trained to identify when a condition requires GP care. If your symptoms suggest something more serious — such as a high fever, symptoms not improving, or a condition outside the scope of the service — we will advise you to see your GP as a matter of priority.
