At Laois Pharmacy in Portlaoise, we provide confidential access to emergency contraception (the morning after pill) without the need for a prescription or GP referral. Our pharmacists handle all requests with complete discretion and professionalism.
What is the Morning After Pill?
Emergency contraception — commonly called the morning after pill — is a safe and effective way to reduce the risk of pregnancy after unprotected sex or contraceptive failure. There are two main types available in Ireland:
- Levonorgestrel (e.g. Levonelle/NorLevo) — most effective when taken within 72 hours (3 days)
- Ulipristal acetate (ellaOne) — effective for up to 120 hours (5 days)
The sooner emergency contraception is taken, the more effective it is.
Do I Need a Prescription?
No. Both forms of the morning after pill are available without a prescription directly from our pharmacy. You do not need to see a GP first.
Is it Confidential?
Yes. All consultations with our pharmacists are completely private and confidential. We have a private consultation area available. Nothing is shared with your GP or any other party without your consent.
How Much Does it Cost?
The cost varies depending on the type of emergency contraception. Please visit us or call 057 86 61999 for current pricing. Emergency contraception is not currently available free of charge under the general medical services scheme in all cases — speak to our team for advice on your specific situation.
