What is Nuromol Dual Action?
Nuromol Dual Action is a combination painkiller. Each tablet holds a fixed dose of two ingredients that many people already take separately, so there is one tablet to take and one dosing schedule to follow.
How the two ingredients work
- Ibuprofen is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). It works by reducing pain and swelling.
- Paracetamol is an analgesic that relieves pain in a different way from ibuprofen.
Nuromol Dual Action is licensed as especially suitable for pain that has not been relieved by ibuprofen or paracetamol alone. In studies of pain after dental surgery, described in its official product information, people first noticed some pain relief after a median of about 16 to 18 minutes, had meaningful relief after about 40 to 45 minutes, and relief lasted around 8 to 9 hours. These are study results and your own response may differ. Always leave at least 6 hours between doses.
What is Nuromol Dual Action used for?
It is licensed for adults for the short-term treatment of mild to moderate pain associated with:
- migraine and headache
- backache
- period pain
- dental pain, such as toothache
- muscular pain
- cold and flu
- sore throat
How to take Nuromol Dual Action
Adults aged 18 and over:
- Take 1 tablet with water and food, up to 3 times a day.
- Leave at least 6 hours between doses.
- If 1 tablet does not control your symptoms, you can take 2 tablets up to 3 times a day, still at least 6 hours apart.
- Do not take more than 6 tablets in 24 hours (1200mg ibuprofen and 3000mg paracetamol).
- Do not use for more than 3 days. Talk to a doctor if you do not feel better, if you feel worse, or if you need a painkiller for longer than 3 days.
Use the lowest dose that works for the shortest time. If you have kidney or liver problems you may need a lower dose or longer gaps between doses, so check with our pharmacist first. If you forget a dose, take it when you remember and leave at least 6 hours before the next one. Never take a double dose. Not for children or teenagers under 18.
Who should not take Nuromol Dual Action
Do not take it if you:
- are under 18
- are allergic to ibuprofen, paracetamol or any of the other ingredients listed below
- have ever had asthma, wheezing, a runny nose, facial swelling or hives after taking aspirin or another anti-inflammatory painkiller
- are already taking another product that contains paracetamol
- are taking other painkillers that contain ibuprofen, aspirin above 75mg a day, or other NSAIDs (including COX-2 inhibitors)
- have, or have ever had, an ulcer, a perforation or bleeding in your stomach or duodenum (small bowel)
- have a blood clotting disorder
- have heart, liver or kidney failure
- are in the last 3 months of pregnancy
Talk to our pharmacist first if you
- are older, or have asthma now or in the past
- have kidney, liver, heart or bowel problems, including Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis
- have high blood pressure, angina or poor circulation in the legs, or have had a heart attack, heart bypass surgery, a stroke or a mini-stroke (TIA)
- have diabetes or high cholesterol, smoke, or have a family history of heart disease or stroke
- weigh less than 50kg, are malnourished or dehydrated, drink alcohol heavily, or are seriously ill, for example with sepsis
- have lupus (SLE) or another connective tissue disease, haemolytic anaemia or G6PD deficiency
- have an infection, because this medicine can hide signs such as fever and pain
- are pregnant, breastfeeding or trying to get pregnant
Important warnings
- No doubling up. Do not take it with any other medicine containing paracetamol (many cold and flu remedies do) or ibuprofen (such as Nurofen), or with aspirin above 75mg a day or other anti-inflammatory painkillers.
- Other medicines. Check with our pharmacist before taking it with any other medicine, especially blood thinners such as warfarin or low-dose aspirin, blood pressure tablets (ACE inhibitors such as captopril, beta-blockers such as atenolol, or ARBs such as losartan), water tablets, steroid tablets, SSRI antidepressants, lithium, heart medicines such as digoxin, methotrexate, ciclosporin, tacrolimus, antibiotics (including flucloxacillin, chloramphenicol and quinolones), zidovudine, mifepristone, metoclopramide, domperidone or cholestyramine.
- Stop taking it and tell your doctor if you get heartburn or indigestion, signs of stomach bleeding (severe stomach pain, black tarry stools, blood in your stools, or vomiting blood or what looks like coffee grounds), a severe allergic reaction (swelling of the face, tongue or throat, difficulty breathing or worsening asthma), chest pain, a stiff neck with headache, fever and sickness, or a serious skin reaction such as blistering, peeling or a widespread rash with fever. Get urgent medical help for any severe reaction.
- Overdose. If you take too much, or a child takes some by accident, get medical advice straight away even if you feel well, because paracetamol can cause delayed, serious liver damage.
- Heart and circulation. Anti-inflammatory painkillers such as ibuprofen may be linked with a small increased risk of heart attack or stroke, mainly at high doses. Do not go over the recommended dose or 3 days of treatment.
- Driving. It can cause dizziness, drowsiness or poor concentration. Do not drive or use machinery if you are affected.
Possible side effects
Like all medicines, it can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. Common ones (up to 1 in 10 people) include stomach pain or discomfort, feeling or being sick, diarrhoea, indigestion, excessive sweating and swelling. The leaflet lists all side effects and when to stop. You can report side effects to the HPRA at www.hpra.ie.
Pregnancy, breastfeeding and fertility
- Last 3 months of pregnancy: do not take it.
- First 6 months of pregnancy: do not take it unless absolutely necessary and advised by your doctor.
- Trying to get pregnant: not recommended. Ibuprofen may make it harder to become pregnant (this reverses when you stop), so talk to your doctor or our pharmacist.
- Breastfeeding: only small amounts pass into breast milk. It may be taken at the recommended dose for the shortest possible time, but check with our pharmacist first.

Tips for taking Nuromol Dual Action
Start with 1 tablet and something to eat, and only step up to 2 if 1 is not enough. A common mistake is doubling up: Nuromol already contains both ibuprofen and paracetamol, so do not take it with Nurofen, Panadol or cold and flu remedies that contain paracetamol, and check the label of anything else you take. If you would rather use separate paracetamol and ibuprofen tablets, our guide to taking paracetamol and ibuprofen together explains how to stay within each medicine’s limits.
Which pack? At the usual dose of 1 tablet 3 times a day, the 12 pack covers a 3-day course. The 24 pack works out cheaper per tablet. Whichever you choose, do not take it for more than 3 days without talking to a doctor.
Nuromol Dual Action FAQs
Is Nuromol the same as Nurofen?
No. Both are made by Reckitt, but standard Nurofen tablets contain ibuprofen only. Nuromol Dual Action contains ibuprofen 200mg plus paracetamol 500mg in one tablet, and it is licensed as especially suitable for pain that has not been relieved by ibuprofen or paracetamol alone. Never take Nurofen and Nuromol together, because both contain ibuprofen.
How many Nuromol Dual Action tablets can I take in 24 hours?
Adults aged 18 and over take 1 tablet with water and food, up to 3 times a day, leaving at least 6 hours between doses. If 1 tablet does not control the pain, you can take 2 tablets up to 3 times a day. Never take more than 6 tablets in 24 hours (1200mg ibuprofen and 3000mg paracetamol), and do not use it for more than 3 days.
Can I take Nuromol with paracetamol, ibuprofen or other medicines?
Do not take it with any other product that contains paracetamol or ibuprofen, with aspirin above 75mg a day, or with other anti-inflammatory painkillers. Some medicines can interact with it, including blood pressure tablets, blood thinners, steroids, some antidepressants and some antibiotics, such as flucloxacillin and quinolones. If you are taking an antibiotic or any other medicine, ask our pharmacist before you take Nuromol, and remember that painkillers can hide signs of an infection such as fever.
Can I take Nuromol on an empty stomach?
It is better not to. The leaflet advises taking each dose with water and food to reduce the chance of side effects, and the most common side effects affect the stomach, such as indigestion and stomach pain.
How long can I take Nuromol Dual Action for?
No more than 3 days. If your pain has not improved, gets worse, or you need a painkiller for longer than 3 days, see your doctor.
Can I take Nuromol if I am pregnant, trying to get pregnant or breastfeeding?
Do not take it in the last 3 months of pregnancy, and do not take it in the first 6 months unless it is absolutely necessary and your doctor advises it. It is not recommended if you are trying to get pregnant. When breastfeeding, it may be used at the recommended dose for the shortest possible time, as only small amounts pass into breast milk. Check with our pharmacist before you order.
