The honest conversation about GLP-1 weight loss medicines has to include the after part: in the big trials, people who stopped semaglutide regained around two-thirds of the weight within a year — on average. But “on average” is not destiny. The people who kept the weight off did specific, learnable things during and after treatment. Here’s what actually works, from the pharmacists who see the whole journey.
Why the weight comes back
GLP-1 medicines quiet the appetite signals. Stop the medicine and the appetite returns — while the body’s tendency to defend its old weight is still there. If the treatment months were only about eating less (and not about building the habits that outlast the injection), the rebound writes itself. The goal is to make the medicine a training phase, not a rental.
The keep-it-off checklist
These are the habits the maintenance research keeps pointing to. How many are already yours?
Never just stop
The single biggest mistake we see: the prescription runs out, life gets busy, and the medicine simply stops with no plan. Talk to your GP before stopping — some people taper, some move to a maintenance approach, some plan a supported stop with scheduled reviews. And if cost is the reason you’re thinking of stopping, tell your GP and us — there are sometimes options (dose, alternative products, scheme coverage) worth checking before going cold turkey.
We stay with you after the last pen
Monthly check-ins, honest advice, and a pharmacist who knows your journey — that’s the difference between a pharmacy and a dispenser. Talk to us about the maintenance phase before you reach it.
Weight maintenance FAQs
Do you regain weight after stopping Ozempic or Wegovy?
On average, trial participants regained about two-thirds of lost weight within a year of stopping. The habits built during treatment — protein, resistance exercise, sleep, monitoring — are what separate maintainers from regainers.
How long do you stay on weight loss injections?
It varies — for many people obesity is treated as a long-term condition, and stopping is a planned, GP-led decision rather than a fixed end date. Never simply stop without a plan.
What is the best way to keep weight off after GLP-1 treatment?
Protect muscle (protein and resistance training), keep a weekly weigh-in, prioritise sleep, cook most meals, and agree a stopping/monitoring plan with your GP before the final dose.
