European regulators have backed the first weight loss pill in the GLP-1 family. Here is what that means for Ireland.
If you have ever quietly put off asking about weight loss medication because the idea of a weekly injection did not sit right with you, this one is worth a read.
In May 2026 European regulators gave their backing to the first weight loss tablet in the GLP-1 family, the same family of medicines people know from Ozempic, Wegovy and Mounjaro. It is a genuine turning point, so here is what actually happened, what the science says, and when you might realistically see it on a pharmacy shelf in Ireland.
The short version. The European Medicines Agency has recommended approving a tablet form of semaglutide for weight management. Semaglutide is the same medicine many people already know as the Wegovy injection. In its main trial the tablet helped people lose around 13.6 percent of their body weight over roughly 15 months. It is the first pill of its kind to get this far in Europe. It still needs a prescription and a doctor’s go ahead, and it is not on shelves yet.
01What the science actually showed
The evidence comes from a trial called OASIS 4, published in the New England Journal of Medicine in September 2025. Researchers followed 307 adults who were overweight or living with obesity and who did not have type 2 diabetes. Half took the semaglutide tablet once a day alongside advice on diet and activity, and the rest took a dummy tablet with the same advice, over 64 weeks.
The people on the tablet lost about 13.6 percent of their body weight on average, compared with just 2.2 percent in the dummy group.
There were knock on benefits too. Waist size, blood pressure and blood sugar all improved, and most of the people who started with prediabetes had returned to normal blood sugar levels by the end. You can read the official regulator summary on the European Medicines Agency website.
02How you actually take it, and why that part matters
This is where the tablet asks something of you. You take it once a day, first thing in the morning, on an empty stomach after a night’s sleep. You swallow it with a small sip of water and then wait about 30 minutes before you eat, drink anything else or take any other tablets. Miss that window and the medicine simply does not absorb the way it should. The dose also starts low and steps up gradually over about 12 weeks, which gives your body time to settle in.
See what that looks like in real numbers
Pop in your weight today and we will show you the trial’s 13.6 percent average, just as an illustration.
This is a simple illustration based on the average result in one trial. It is not a prediction or a promise. Real results vary a lot from person to person, and this medicine is only suitable for some people, decided by a doctor.
03The honest bit about side effects
No one should sell this as magic, so here is the balanced view. The most common effects are digestive: feeling sick, being sick, constipation and looser bowels. In the trial around three quarters of people had some tummy effect, usually in the early weeks and usually easing off as the dose builds slowly. Most were mild or moderate rather than serious. It will not suit everyone, and that is exactly why a prescriber weighs it all up with you first rather than handing it out to anyone who asks.
04Tablet, injection or orforglipron: how they line up
| Option | Type | Rough average weight loss | Where it stands right now |
|---|---|---|---|
| Semaglutide tablet (oral Wegovy) | Daily tablet | About 13.6 percent | Backed by the EMA in May 2026, moving toward full European approval |
| Semaglutide injection (Wegovy) | Weekly injection | About 15 percent | Already available in Ireland on prescription |
| Orforglipron (Foundayo) | Daily tablet | Up to about 12 percent | Approved in the United States, still waiting on Europe |
Orforglipron is the other tablet racing toward Irish pharmacies, and it works in a slightly different way. We wrote a full plain English guide to it here: What orforglipron (Foundayo) means for Ireland.
05So when will it actually reach Ireland?
The OASIS 4 trial results are published in the New England Journal of Medicine.
The European Medicines Agency committee recommends approving the tablet for weight management, the first oral GLP-1 to reach this point in Europe.
The European Commission formalises that approval across the EU, which includes Ireland.
Pricing and reimbursement discussions in Ireland shape how, and at what cost, it lands in pharmacies. This stage can take its time.
Being honest with you, this is months away rather than weeks, and it will be prescription only from day one. Anyone promising it to you sooner than that is getting ahead of the facts.
06What this means for you
The headline is genuinely good news. A daily tablet takes the needle out of the equation for a lot of people, and it does not need to be kept cold, which makes it far easier to live with. But it is a prescription medicine meant for people who meet certain criteria, used alongside diet and activity, and decided on by a doctor. It is not something you will pick up off a shelf.
In the meantime the foundations still matter and still work: the food you keep in the house, moving a bit more than yesterday, decent sleep, and a plan you can actually stick to. None of that goes out of date when a new pill arrives.
Common questions
Is the tablet available in Ireland yet?
Not yet. It has been recommended for approval in Europe, but it still needs the final EU sign off and then the Irish availability and pricing steps before it reaches pharmacies. When it does arrive it will be prescription only.
Will I need a prescription?
Yes. Just like the injections, it is a prescription medicine that a doctor decides is right for you after looking at your health and your goals.
How is the tablet different from the Wegovy injection?
It is the same medicine in a different form. The injection is once a week. The tablet is once a day on an empty stomach, with a strict 30 minute wait before food or other medicines. The amount of weight people lose is broadly similar between the two.
How much weight could someone lose?
In the main trial people lost about 13.6 percent of their body weight on average over roughly 15 months. Results vary a lot from person to person, and they depend on sticking with the daily routine and the lifestyle changes alongside it.
Is it safe?
It has been through large clinical trials and a full regulatory review. The most common effects are digestive and tend to settle over time. It is not suitable for everyone, which is the whole reason a prescriber assesses you before you start.
Can Laois Pharmacy get it for me?
We cannot supply it until it is approved and prescribed, so please be wary of anyone who says otherwise. What we can do is explain your options clearly and point you in the right direction. Just ask in store.
