For years, the big drawback of the most effective weight-loss medicines was simple: they’re injections. That’s changing. A weight-loss pill called orforglipron — brand name Foundayo — has now been approved in the United States, and the UK and Europe are next in line. Here’s what it is, what the trials show, and when it might reach Ireland.
Why a pill is a big deal
The current weight-loss medicines (Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro) all work well, but they’re weekly injections — and for a lot of people, the needle is the reason they never start. Orforglipron is a once-daily tablet you can take any time of day, with or without food. For needle-averse patients, that removes the single biggest barrier to treatment.
It’s also a small molecule that’s simpler to manufacture than injectable medicines, which many experts hope will eventually help with the supply shortages and cost that have dogged the injectables.
What the clinical trials show
Orforglipron was tested in a large Phase 3 programme. The main weight-loss study, ATTAIN-1, followed 3,127 adults with obesity for 72 weeks.
In separate type 2 diabetes trials (the ACHIEVE programme, presented at the American Diabetes Association’s 2026 Scientific Sessions), orforglipron improved blood-sugar control and produced weight loss — and in a head-to-head study published in The Lancet, it outperformed the existing oral semaglutide pill (Rybelsus). Side effects are broadly the GLP-1 family’s usual ones — mostly nausea and digestive upset, generally easing over time.

When will the weight-loss pill reach Ireland?
Approved in the US doesn’t mean available here — Ireland follows the European (EMA) approval route. Here’s the realistic timeline:
Orforglipron (Foundayo) approved for weight management in the United States.
European regulatory submission and review; a UK and EU launch is expected around 2027.
Ireland, as part of the EU system, would expect availability in roughly the same window — 2027 at the earliest, subject to EMA approval and supply.

Is there a weight-loss pill now?
Yes — orforglipron (brand name Foundayo) is the first GLP-1 tablet approved for weight loss, cleared in the US in April 2026. It is not yet available in Ireland; a European and Irish launch is expected around 2027.
How is the pill different from Ozempic or Wegovy?
It’s the same family of medicine (GLP-1) but taken as a once-daily tablet instead of a weekly injection — with no needle and no food or water timing restrictions. Trial weight loss (around 14–15%) is a little below the top injectables but very substantial for a pill.
When will orforglipron / Foundayo be available in Ireland?
Around 2027 at the earliest. It needs European (EMA) approval first, which typically follows US approval by a year or more.
Does the weight-loss pill work as well as the injections?
In trials it produced around 14–15% average weight loss — strong for an oral medicine, though the best injections (like Mounjaro) still show higher figures. For people who won’t use a needle, a pill they’ll actually take is often the better real-world choice.
